The Church of the Resurrection in Clarkston, Michigan had its beginning in January 1960. A group of local Episcopalians, who had been attending other area churches, expressed their desire to the Reverend C. George Widdifield, Rector of All Saints’ Church in Pontiac, Michigan to start a mission in Clarkston. The decision was made to proceed and in early March a delegation representing 15 families met with Bishop Richard Emrich, who approved the plan. The first service was held on Palm Sunday 1960, with the Rt. Rev. Archie H. Crowley celebrating the Eucharist in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Jack Haupt for 35 worshippers.
A Bishop’s Committee was formed and in June 1960, regular Sunday Services were being conducted in Clarkston Elementary School with the help of various clergy. The Rev. Alexander T. Stewart was called as the mission’s first Vicar and began his duties on November 6, 1960. With the help of a substantial gift from Mr. Jack Haupt, a mortgage was obtained and a vicarage purchased.
In February 1961, the Clarkston group was accepted by the Diocese as an organized Mission. By this time, the church had 48 communicants, with an average attendance of 55 and a Church School of 25 children. Nineteen sixty-one also saw the organization of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) with Mrs. Robert Osgood as its first President. The Altar Guild was officially organized with Mrs. Walter Forbes as Director.
The Mission’s dream of their own church building was greatly enhanced by the gift of three acres of land from Mr. John DeLind. A Building Committee was formed and began working towards its realization. In 1963, an architect was employed and ground was broken on August 5, 1964. The new church building was dedicated on May 23, 1965 by the Rt. Rev. Archie H. Crowley, Suffragan Bishop of Michigan.
Over the years, various changes have been made to our property and building. An evaluation of our needs in 1974 indicated the necessity of the expansion of the parish hall by approximately 1200 square feet, to include quarters for toddlers and infants, storage space and another meeting room for the parish.
On October 1976, at the 143rd Annual Diocesan Convention in Midland, The Church of the Resurrection was accepted as a parish of the Diocese of Michigan.
In 1985, another building expansion was started to provide a new, higher, cedar-shake roof, an enlarged nave, a new sacristy, a new narthex and a solar corridor. An additional meeting room and larger offices were also added. All the work for this expansion was undertaken by volunteers from the parish.
